About the Event

This year, we have a very special first prize in addition to the cash prize awarded. The winner of each division will open for the Internationally acclaimed Tartan Terrors to a sold out crowd at the Mauch Chunk Opera House at 8 p.m. the evening of the competition.

There will be two Divisions by age, each with cash prizes for first through third places:

Division 1:  13 and under     $100 / $50 / $25 Division 2:  14-18     $100 / $50 / $25

There will be two age divisions (under 13 and 14-18), each with cash prizes for 1st-3rd places. Contestants are to play TWO tunes, on a fiddle (violin, viola, etc.): first, an Irish or Scottish fiddle tune (traditional fiddle style, such as a reel, jig, hornpipe, slow air, etc), and second, one tune in a traditional Canadian fiddle style in honor of Ellen Irmisch, founding member of the Tartan Terrors who passed away in August. Ellen attended our inaugural fiddle competition last March and we want to honor her memory with these beautiful Canadian tunes.

Total time for each contestant is limited to six minutes for the two tunes. Sheet music will NOT be permitted.

Each contestant may have up to two non-fiddle accompanists, who may only play “backup” rhythm (i.e., not a melodic part), so the judges can hear the fiddler's performance clearly. A piano/keyboard will be provided.
